Necessity?

I was just thinking about a common idea among most people.  We say that the necessities of life are food, clothing, and shelter, and anything else is a luxury.  But there are two problems with this.

1.  This is addressing only our physical body.  We’ve seen from feral children, for instance, that if you do not have normal interaction with other humans, you will not be ok.  You may be alive, but you won’t be very functional.

2.  Why is clothing a necessity?  For thousands of years we didn’t wear clothing.  There are still tribes that don’t wear clothes in the world.    We certainly will not die from  lack of clothing, unless we’re in low temperatures.  And even then, the issue is resolved with proper shelter.  So in general, there is no need for clothing, as far as survival goes.

What this tells me is that we are so repressed sexually that we believe that one of the three most important things we need is clothing, to cover our naked bodies.  That’s amazing to me!  We never say air, or water when we make this list.  Yet, if we were to go in order, our needs are:  air, water, shelter, food.  With those things we will physically live.  It doesn’t take into account spiritual needs or anything like that, but if you’re in a survival situation, you have to go in order of priority in order to make it through alive.

Hmm…in any case, I thought this was interesting today.  And now I’ll return to my homework due in a half hour.
